The Sim Lifestyle

Hey,

It's me Caitlin. I myself am a lover of sims and have been since I was a child. Recently, as a result of having a lot of spare time, I rediscovered my love with Sims 4. Whilst loading the game, I started thinking about how easier our lives would be if we had our own diamonds above our heads that tell us what we need to keep our moods in check. So I came up with the concept of 'The Sim Lifestyle'. You may think I've lost my marbles but just hear me out.

My idea is that you write down the 6 subjects that come under the sims needs - energy, hunger, fun, social, hygiene and bladder.  Then I suggest that you come up with your own personalised plan of how many times a day you need to do each thing, which will enable you to keep an eye on your happiness.

If you've ever played the Sims you'll know that the ultimate goal is to have all your sims in a green happy mood, succeeding in their career and life. My theory is if you can track your needs and keep a healthy balance between fun activities and self-caring, then you will find it easier to have a 'green diamond over your head'. The goal is to know what you need and when you need it. Overall you will be genuinely happier.

As you probably learnt in school, all theories need a plan or method that will give you results. I've gone through each section and picked my ideal plan. Like I said before you should personalise your sim lifestyle to yourself, but there is nothing stopping you from using mine, or taking it as a guideline.

The first need, hunger, is pretty self-explanatory. The average person should eat three scheduled meals, which are known as breakfast, lunch and dinner. You could just tick, or mark off after each meal so you keep track of when you eat, however I have decided to write down what I ate at that point in the day. I like this idea because it allows me to track what I eat as well as when.

Energy is slightly different to the rest as you can't really track how many times each day you need to sleep, because you should be sleeping once each day (depending on your lifestyle). My suggestion for this need is to work out how much sleep you should be getting each  night and scheduling your alarms around this. The first alarm should be 20 minutes before going to bed so you can get ready and be in bed on time, and the second should be in the morning when you need to get up. If you have made a visual timetable/board to track your sim lifestyle, I would advise you to write how many hours of sleep you need to get.

My ideal suggestion of how much fun you should have each day would be to allow two 'sessions' of something of your choice. Obviously there is nothing wrong with having more than two if you can fit it in, but a lot of people have limited time, and these people should be aiming at doing two fun things each day. This could be reading a book, watching television or even dancing around to your favourite song; just do something fun.

For the social need, I would recommend you speak to 3-4 people at least each day, otherwise you become wrapped in a world of silence and explode everything in your head the next time you do talk to someone. Having conversations with your family at dinner time talking about your day, or calling your friends on the phone will help you to not get locked inside your own mind. On my board, I wrote down the names of the people I spoke to during the day.

Hygiene is another straight forward need. You should be washing at least twice a day, and the easiest way to remember this is to do it once you've woken up and before you go to bed. Showers are an easy way to get clean and are environmentally friendly (as long as you don't perform a whole concert in there). In my hygiene section, I wrote that I had a shower, and that I'd washed my hair so I know then when to next wash it.

The hardest one to plan for, in my opinion, is the need bladder. You can't really say I'm going to the toilet this amount of times a day because your body doesn't work like that. If you really want to use it as a need, I would just count how many times each day you've gone to the toilet. I didn't want to leave the section of my board blank so I wrote when I did go.

After I'd thought over the needs to continue the happy green mood, I began to think of the other aspects of the sim world. The career icon in the corner tells you what the ideal mood to go into work with and the daily tasks that you have to do. My interpretation of this is to write down what needs to be done, if you have any tasks to do at home to help at work or to prepare for work.
As I am still in education, I wrote down my homework tasks (rather than as the sims say 'do homework'). I also wrote down the activities I need to work on for my part-time job.

The sims also keep track of their skills, whether this be charisma, playing an instrument or fixing household items. I thought that it would be a good idea to schedule in at least 20 minutes of three things you would consider your skills each week. This could be that you do them all on a day you have free, or cast it as one of your fun 'sessions' for that day.

Finally, the last step in 'The Sim Lifestyle' is the aspirations box. As a child it is slightly easier to make a job aspiration or 'what I want to be', however everybody has aspirations, even the adult sims. I wrote easy milestones and ones that will take longer, for example preparing for college is easier than becoming a professional dancer.

Now you've read my weird thought, I'd love to hear your opinions on it. You may still think I'm crazy, but it's a thought that I wanted to get down and share because to me it seems like a cool idea. If you do actually give this thing a go, I'd love to see what you think. If you make 'The Sim Lifestyle' board, please share them with me. I have used an A2 sized piece of paper, post-it notes, highlighters, glue and felt-tip pens.
